Three Unforgettable Destinations You Won’t Want to Miss

A Journey of Funmaxxing: Exploring Copenhagen and Berlin

Traveling is not just about the destination; it’s about the experiences you gather along the way. Inspired by Dua Lipa’s ethos of “funmaxxing”—where the focus shifts from cramming activities into a trip to savoring every moment—my husband Cam and I planned a trip from Copenhagen to Berlin, focusing on celebrating everyday pleasures. Here’s a glimpse into our adventure.

    I. The Danish Coast: Rox Resort

Before diving into the urban charm of Copenhagen, we began our journey along the serene Danish coast. Just 30 minutes from the city lies Rox Resort in the quiet town of Køge, a place that might surprise you but is a true treasure on the Baltic coast.

Imagine French Riviera vibes mingling with Danish design—three year-round pools, inviting daybeds, and a comforting sauna await. The lobby feels like a vibrant social club, adorned with velvet armchairs and colorful décor, breaking from traditional Scandinavian minimalism. It’s a beautifully eclectic space asking you to sit back and indulge.

    The Great Danish Wind-Down

At Rox, we quickly adopted our unofficial dress code: plush robes and cozy slippers. With the glittering Baltic Sea in view, lounging became an art form. Dining at Smith, an enticing restaurant with floral sparkling tea, became the highlight. The Arctic char with trout roe and champagne beurre blanc was simply divine, paired with Denmark’s beloved summer staple: new potatoes.

    A Birthday on the Rox

Waking up on my birthday, I was greeted by Cam with a plate of pink sprinkle donuts. We spent the morning strolling through Køge Marina, where I received a bouquet of wildflowers. This blend of relaxation and exploration felt like the perfect celebration of life.

    II. Copenhagen: Bikes and Bites

Copenhagen, recently dubbed the world’s happiest city, welcomed us with open arms. We set out to discover its charm via bicycles—an integral part of the local culture. Navigating the bike lanes, I felt the city’s energy and rhythm. Soon, we were weaving through neighborhoods, stopping to indulge in local flavors.

Our first culinary stop was Kødbyens Fiskebar in the Meatpacking District for fresh Nordic seafood, followed by a classic Danish hot dog at Reffen, the largest street food market in Northern Europe. Don’t miss Gasoline Grill, touted to serve one of the best burgers in the world.

A City Built on Bread and Butter

One morning, we ventured to Atelier September in Nordhavn for breakfast, relishing thick sourdough with aged Comté and a mound of whipped butter. Seeking out the local pastry scene, we tried Andersen & Maillard’s brunsviger and La Cabra’s espresso cream banana bread. Each bakery brought its unique charm and flavor.

Our pastry pilgrimage must include Juno the Bakery, famous for its cardamom buns, and a visit to Hart Bageri, featured in The Bear. Here, the Spandauer layered with vanilla custard was enjoyed against the stunning backdrop of the harbor and Amalienborg Palace.

III. Experiencing Life Like a Local

Meeting Cam’s cousins who live in Copenhagen, we embraced a quintessential Danish lifestyle mantra: “work hard, play hard.” They guided us to Rosenborg Castle and the Botanical Gardens, providing insight into Danish culture and design.

We also dove into the vibrant shopping scene at stores like Louise Roe and Ferm Living, where I found unique accessories, feeling inspired to adopt the effortless style of Copenhagen.

    In Dua We Trust

In true “Dua Lipa style,” we sought out her favorite spots. Lunch at Poulette proved the chicken sandwich really was the best—juicy and packed with flavor. We then visited her wine bar Pompette and the stunning gardens at Noma Projects. Our visit to La Banchina ended with sunset views over the water, the ideal end to a perfect day.

IV. The Past, Preserved: Wilmina Hotel

After a brief flight to Berlin, we arrived at Wilmina, an innovative hotel housed in a formerly operated women’s prison. The architectural design respects its history while inviting guests into a warm, communal space.

The transformation is remarkable: original cell doors serve as reminders of the past, while large windows usher in light and warmth. Our suite was a testament to this balance, showcasing a stunning and inviting atmosphere.

    Kreuzberg Can Wait

On our first day exploring Charlottenburg, we visited Schloss Charlottenburg, followed by dinner at Comedor, renowned for its exceptional Mexican cuisine. We opted for low-key nightlife with non-alcoholic cocktails at Lovis Bar, perfect for winding down in Wilmina’s charming courtyard.

    V. Berlin, at an Easier Pace

Our Berlin mornings began slowly, enjoying breakfast from Wilmina Brot, the hotel’s own bakery. Exploring Tiergarten and Museum Island, we took in the city’s history, learning at a relaxed pace.

A compelling bike tour revealed Berlin’s hidden gems, and we concluded our day with riverside drinks and local currywurst, a classic Berliner experience.

Finding the Beauty in Plain Sight

Amid pastries, biking excursions, and remarkable hotels, I truly understood Dua Lipa’s funmaxxing philosophy: collecting moments over mere activities. This trip taught us that joy is often found in familiar places, waiting to be savored fully if we take the time to appreciate the journey. Each experience, big or small, becomes a piece of the memory tapestry we weave through travel, grounding us in these moments of joy.
