Dolphin Drilling’s 52-Year-Old Rig Extends Its Role in India’s Oil and Gas Exploration

Dolphin Drilling, an Oslo-listed company headquartered in Aberdeen, has made headlines with its recent announcement regarding the Blackford Dolphin, a mid-water and deepwater semi-submersible drilling rig. The company is set to extend the rig’s assignment off the coast of India with Oil India Limited, a prominent exploration and production company.

The Blackford Dolphin, built in 1974, has been recognized for its robust capabilities in deepwater drilling. This extension will keep the rig engaged with Oil India Limited until at least August 28, 2026. The new contract allows for the continued execution of drilling, testing, and abandonment operations at locations east of India, maintaining the same terms and scope as the previous agreement.

This semi-submersible rig boasts an enhanced Aker H-3 design, capable of accommodating up to 120 personnel. Dolphin Drilling takes pride in its ongoing partnership with Oil India Limited, emphasizing a commitment to safety and efficiency throughout operations. The Blackford Dolphin embarked on a hydrocarbon exploration campaign with Oil India in November 2024, marking a significant collaboration in the region.

Last year, Dolphin Drilling chose to exercise an option for a 120-day extension on the original contract, enhancing a campaign that originally comprised three firm wells. This added time ensured that the Blackford Dolphin would remain in operation until May 10, 2026. As exploration demands evolve, the company has now confirmed that the rig will stay until late July for the successful completion of the project.

The strategic decision to extend this drilling contract illustrates Dolphin Drilling’s commitment to maintaining high operational standards. It enables the effective execution of complex drilling tasks while navigating the rigors of the Indian offshore environment. Such moves not only underline the importance of robust partnerships in the energy sector but also highlight the potential for growth and innovation amidst challenging operational landscapes.

Ultimately, the extended contract with Oil India Limited not only solidifies a critical ongoing collaboration but also reflects the adaptability of Dolphin Drilling in responding to industry needs. As the company gears up for the continued efforts off the Indian coast, it reinforces a narrative of progress and dedication to safe and effective operations.
