Aker BP, alongside partners Equinor and PGNiG Upstream Norway, recently celebrated a significant milestone with the confirmed sail-away of the Hugin B topside. This event marks another step in the development of the Yggdrasil area, which stands as a key venture in the rapidly developing Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS). The project’s progress underscores the strong collaborative spirit among stakeholders and the region’s commitment to advancing energy solutions.

In December 2022, Aker BP and its partners expressed their confidence in the Yggdrasil area by making a final investment decision (FID) and subsequently submitted plans for development and operation (PDOs) to the Norwegian Ministry of Petroleum and Energy. This foundational commitment reflects the companies’ strategic foresight, particularly amid the ongoing global shifts in energy production and sustainability practices.

On July 6, 2026, the Hugin B topside departed from Aker Solutions’ facility in Verdal, a notable achievement that signifies not just the completion of an individual project, but a culmination of extensive efforts over the past three and a half years. This venture has involved the successful delivery of several projects, contributing significantly to the regional economy and labor market.

The journey of these projects has not only been marked by economic growth but also by the creation of thousands of man-years of employment in the sector. For instance, the recent departures of the Fenris jacket and pre-drilling module in June 2024, followed by the Valhall PWP jacket, and then the Hugin A jacket, reflect a consistent output from Verdal. These developments are crucial in maintaining the momentum of Norway’s offshore production capabilities.

Karl Johnny Hersvik, CEO of Aker BP, expressed pride in this achievement, highlighting the exceptional delivery of major projects and the ability to maintain a robust supply chain despite market challenges. He stated, “This is a powerful example of what the Norwegian supplier industry can achieve through close collaboration. Since sanctioning these projects, we have committed to securing activity, developing competence, and preparing for future value chains.” This sentiment resonates with the broader goals of the industry, striving to innovate and adapt to the evolving energy landscape.

The positive impact of the Hugin B project extends beyond immediate economic benefits. A significant emphasis has been placed on apprenticeship and training, with more than 130 apprentices gaining hands-on experience in the sector since 2022. This initiative not only nurtures the next generation of energy professionals but also reinforces the commitment to building a knowledgeable workforce amidst changing industry demands.

Kjetel Digre, CEO of Aker Solutions, reiterated the importance of these projects in driving value for Norway and enhancing energy security. He noted, “Through closer collaboration, we have reduced construction time and enabled more efficient operations.” This strategic partnership among Aker BP, Aker Solutions, and Siemens Energy has led to innovations in project management, utilizing advanced robotics and digital tools that not only boost productivity but also enhance overall safety in offshore operations.

The Fixed Facilities Alliance, comprised of key players like Aker BP, ABB, and Aker Solutions, has been pivotal in realizing the Valhall PWP and Fenris platforms. Collectively, over 42,000 tonnes of material have been delivered from the Verdal yard, showcasing the scale and ambition of these projects. Hersvik noted that despite high market volatility, these initiatives have been executed safely and efficiently, embodying the capability of Norwegian suppliers to respond to complex offshore challenges.

As the projects such as Yggdrasil and Valhall PWP-Fenris evolve, the alliance model will continue to play a crucial role in ensuring timely delivery and addressing challenges. “These projects are complex puzzles, and we depend on precise timing and coordination offshore,” Hersvik remarked, underscoring the necessity of collaboration in achieving success in increasingly intricate energy projects.
