Namibian Discovery Confirms Continuity of Oil-Bearing Reservoirs

Exciting Prospects: Rhino Resources’ Appraisal of Orange Basin Discovery

Rhino Resources, an emerging player in African energy exploration, has made significant strides in the oil sector with its recent activities in Namibia’s Orange Basin. The company has confirmed a connected oil-bearing reservoir at its appraisal well, bringing renewed excitement and optimism to the region.

    The Capricornus-1A Appraisal Well

Rhino Resources provided an update on its drilling campaign in the PEL 85 joint venture, which aims to tap into the promising reserves of the Orange Basin. The Capricornus-1A appraisal well was successfully drilled in the eastern segment of the Capricornus fairway, a key area previously established by the notable discovery at Capricornus-1X.

The drilling operation commenced on May 2, 2026, utilizing the Saipem 12000 drillship in a deep water setting of 1,285 meters. The well reached a total depth of 4,818 meters by June 11, 2026, with operations conducted smoothly and without incidents.

    Key Findings: Reservoir Insights

The Capricornus-1A well intersected a gross reservoir interval measuring 46 meters. Critical data was gathered, including a representative core from the main reservoir section, along with a comprehensive suite of wireline logging and formation evaluation data. Preliminary analyses of this data indicate promising signs of an oil-bearing sandstone reservoir, which appears to be in pressure communication with the previously discovered reservoir at Capricornus-1X.

Travis Smithard, CEO of Rhino Resources, highlighted the significance of these findings, stating, “The Capricornus-1A well has delivered important information that advances our understanding of the morphology of the Capricornus reservoir system.” This evidence of reservoir continuity not only supports the viability of the site but also enhances confidence for further drilling endeavors.

Integration of Data for Future Exploration

The gathered core, pressure, and wireline datasets from Capricornus-1A will be integrated with previously collected data across PEL 85. This comprehensive analysis is crucial for planning upcoming appraisal and exploration activities, as it enriches the existing knowledge base.

Smithard also pointed out that the well provided invaluable insights into deeper geological intervals that were not identified at Capricornus-1X. This deeper geological understanding is critical for clarifying how subsurface structures influence play fairways within the license area.

    The Joint Venture Landscape

The PEL 85 block is operated by Rhino Resources, which holds a 42.5% working interest. The joint venture also includes co-venturers such as Azule Energy (42.5%), NAMCOR (10%), and Korres Investments (5%). This collaborative structure enables an effective sharing of resources and expertise, paving the way for a systematic exploration strategy across the basin.

    Future Prospects and Continued Development

With the data now at hand, Rhino Resources is poised to continue its appraisal drilling across the Capricornus accumulation, while also exploring additional targets within PEL 85. Each new discovery could alter the energy landscape of Namibia and enhance the economic prospects of the region significantly.

The recent developments underscore a pivotal moment for Rhino Resources and its partners, as they navigate the complexities of offshore oil exploration. With a focus on harnessing advanced technology and thorough geological assessments, they are strategically positioned to make significant contributions to the energy sector in Namibia and beyond.

The Broader Impact on the Offshore Energy Community

As Rhino Resources continues its exploration and appraisal efforts, these developments promise not only to benefit the stakeholders involved but also to contribute meaningfully to the regional economy. The Orange Basin’s potential for oil production could have far-reaching effects, transforming Namibia into a more significant player in the global energy market.

With robust investment and strategic partnerships, the offshore energy community is set to engage deeply with Rhino Resources’ findings as this story unfolds.
