An appraisal well drilled by Norway’s oil & gas player Wellesley Petroleum and its partners offshore Norway has confirmed gas/condensate discovery in the North Sea.
The well 35/10 16 S is the third well drilled in production license 1148, which is valid from March 11, 2022, to March 11, 2029, and relates to the Carmen appraisal. This strategic move highlights the growing interest and investment in untapped offshore resources in the North Sea.
Located at a water depth of 365 meters, the well is situated approximately 25 kilometers northwest of the prominent Troll field and 35 kilometers east of the Kvitebjørn field. Drilled using the cutting-edge Deepsea Yantai rig (previously known as Beacon Atlantic), this endeavor embodies the technological advancements in offshore drilling operations.
Preliminary calculations following the drilling have unveiled promising results, revealing an estimated 3.4 to 17 million standard cubic meters (Sm3) of recoverable oil equivalent (o.e.). This equates to a potential yield of between 21 to 107 million barrels of oil equivalent, painting a favorable outlook for future extraction efforts.
As the operator of production license 1148, Wellesley Petroleum is joined by a strong cohort of partners, including DNO, Equinor, and Aker BP. Together, these companies are poised to investigate various avenues for developing the Carmen resource back to the existing infrastructure in the region. There’s also speculation about drilling additional wildcat wells to uncover further potential in the area, which reflects a proactive approach towards resource exploration.
The Deepsea Yantai rig is set to move on from this well to drill the appraisal well 35/7-2 concerning the Afrodite discovery in production license 293. This ongoing activity underscores the dynamic nature of offshore exploration and the commitment of companies like Wellesley Petroleum to expand their portfolio and leverage new discoveries for energy production.
