Tragedy at Sea: The MT Settebello Incident

A Promise Shattered

Patnala Suresh, an experienced marine engineer from India, had assured his wife, Bhargavi, that he would be home soon. They were looking forward to celebrating their 15th wedding anniversary later this month. “He told me he would be home soon. I never imagined he would return like this,” Bhargavi expressed, her heart heavy with grief. Tragically, Suresh was killed when the oil tanker MT Settebello, on which he served as chief engineer, was struck by the US military in the Gulf of Oman.

The Incident Explained

According to the US military, their strike was part of enforcing a blockade aimed at Iran-linked shipping. They claimed the tanker had been noncompliant, allegedly transporting Iranian oil. Precision munitions were targeted at the vessel’s engine room. However, the ship’s management company, IOS Marine FZE, strongly disputed these claims, asserting that the tanker had no ties to Iran and had not received any prior warning before the attack.

The Aftermath and Rescue Efforts

While Suresh was one of three Indian sailors who lost their lives in this tragic incident, twenty-one other crew members, all Indian nationals, were rescued. For Suresh’s family, the loss is devastating. For years, he had devoted himself to maintaining and inspecting the ship’s key machinery, often spending months away from home. Balancing the risks of maritime life against the support he provided to his family was a challenge they had grown accustomed to, but this incident has turned their world upside down.

Communication Breakdown

Communication with the vessel became sporadic from June 5, eventually ceasing entirely by June 9. Initially, Bhargavi attributed the silence to potential network issues stemming from the ship’s isolated location. After a tense wait of two days, her worst fears were confirmed: Suresh had died in the strike. Learnings about the circumstances surrounding his death revealed that he was inspecting a fault in the ship’s generators, leaving no opportunity for him to escape the attack.

The Family’s Struggle

As the sole breadwinner, Suresh’s death has left a significant void. Bhargavi, who finds herself grappling with the sudden loss, articulated her concerns poignantly: “The entire family depended on his income. Now I don’t know how I’ll educate or raise the children.”

His two sons and two nieces, whom he supported after the death of Bhargavi’s elder sister and brother-in-law, are now facing an uncertain future.

Mourning Beyond the Family

The tragedy extends beyond Suresh’s household. In Himachal Pradesh, the family of 23-year-old Aditya Sharma mourns their only son, also aboard the MT Settebello. Aditya’s father, Rajesh Sharma, seeks not just the return of his son’s body but clarity on the final moments of his life. He questions how three crew members could perish while others were rescued.

In Uttar Pradesh, Shivanand Chaurasia’s family also waits in anguish for answers. The 35-year-old fitter’s last conversation occurred just a day before communication failed. His father expresses a similar sentiment, seeking understanding in the chaos that unfolded.

Government Response

Indian Union Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal labeled the deaths a “profound loss” for India’s maritime community. He emphasized ongoing efforts to repatriate the bodies to their families, acknowledging the tragedy’s far-reaching impact.

In an effort to address the international dimensions of this incident, India lodged a formal protest with the United States, urging an end to attacks on commercial vessels in the region. The International Maritime Organization has also expressed condemnation regarding acts that jeopardize seafarers and international shipping.

The families of the victims remain in limbo, awaiting the return of their loved ones while grappling with the disquieting claims made by both the US military and the ship’s management. The conflicting narratives highlight the urgent need for accountability and a transparent investigation into the incident, which has left a lingering sense of loss and confusion in its wake.
