Equinor’s North Sea Operations: COSL’s 2012 Rig Approved for P&A Activities

Norway’s state-owned energy giant Equinor is set to embark on crucial plugging and abandonment (P&A) activities in the North Sea, following approval from the Norwegian authorities. These operations will utilize the COSL Promoter, a semi-submersible rig owned by COSL Drilling Europe, a reputable player in offshore drilling.

The Norwegian Ocean Industry Authority (Havtil) has officially granted Equinor consent to deploy the COSL Promoter for permanent plugging and abandonment operations specifically on the Tordis field. This activity is vital for ensuring the integrity of the field and adhering to environmental regulations.

The main objective of this operation is to permanently plug the 34/7-K-4 HT2 well, which involves sealing the reservoir and Lista formation. This will significantly enhance the well’s barrier status, crucial for preventing any potential environmental risks that could arise from abandoned wells.

Situated in the Tampen area of the northern North Sea, the Tordis field enjoys a water depth ranging from 150 to 220 meters. The field was discovered back in 1987, and its development plan received the green light in 1991. This approval laid the groundwork for what would become a significant contributor to Norway’s offshore energy portfolio.

The development of Tordis has been characterized by a robust infrastructure. It is connected to a central subsea manifold that links back to the Gullfaks C platform. This central manifold not only facilitates the extraction of oil but also plays a critical role in injecting water to enhance production efficiency. The Tordis field features a total of seven single-well satellites alongside two subsea templates, all interconnected with the manifold. Its production commenced in 1994, marking a significant milestone for the region’s economy.

Equinor’s ongoing commitment to responsible energy management is evident in its approach to P&A activities. By prioritizing safe and environmentally-conscious methods, the company underscores its dedication not just to operational success but also to sustainability in the offshore energy sector.
