    Kiez Kebab, located on Golborne Road in west London, is not your average kebab shop. Designed by Annabel Colterjohn in collaboration with architecture firm Red Deer, the restaurant captures the gritty yet welcoming essence of Berlin’s kebab shops. Named after the German word for “neighborhood,” Kiez Kebab aims to elevate traditional kebabs from a quickly consumed late-night snack to a high-quality culinary experience.

    Design Philosophy

    The interior reflects a thoughtful blend of industrial materials, creating a space that feels both contemporary and deeply rooted in the urban fabric of Berlin. “We wanted to import the casual, convivial feel of Berlin,” Colterjohn shares, emphasizing the restaurant’s aim to create an inviting atmosphere for locals and newcomers alike. With a seating capacity of 30, the no-reservation policy encourages a casual dining experience, prompting patrons to stay and enjoy the ambiance.

    Spatial Dynamics

    The layout of Kiez Kebab is crafted to optimize its long, narrow space, allowing effortless movement for both guests and staff. A centerpiece of this design is the communal table, lovingly termed the “archipelago of steel.” This organically shaped table not only serves as a gathering spot but also invites shared dining experiences—an often overlooked aspect in fast food environments. Bespoke bar counters, inspired by the same fluidity of design, challenge conventional notions of steel as a cold and unwelcoming material.

    Material Choices

    Colterjohn and Red Deer chose materials that evoke the raw beauty of postwar Berlin’s brutalist architecture. Microcement, raw plaster, aluminum, and walnut wood harmoniously coexist to reflect the restaurant’s commitment to classic, honest ingredients. The use of stainless steel, typically associated with industrial kitchens, is softened through design to enhance warmth and intimacy within the space.

    Sound and Atmosphere

    Drawing inspiration from Berlin’s vibrant music scene, Kiez Kebab features a custom-built sound system by Friendly Pressure, which enhances the dining experience. One of the bar counters transforms into a DJ booth, complete with integrated equipment, fostering a lively, dynamic atmosphere. This feature aligns seamlessly with the restaurant’s vision of being a space where guests can enjoy good food, music, and company.

    Multi-Functionality

    Kiez Kebab is designed for versatility, catering to diners who wish to enjoy a leisurely meal or those just looking for a quick takeaway. The restaurant incorporates clever design elements, such as an additional window shelf, allowing guests to enjoy their meals al fresco. Much of the furniture is custom-made to serve multiple functions; storage is artistically integrated into benches and tables, and the communal table can be disassembled to adapt to different events or crowd sizes.

    Collaboration and Craftsmanship

    The execution of the design relied on a collaborative effort with various contractors, including Berlin-based metalworking studio Tebton, which crafted unique bar stools, tables, and lighting fixtures adapted from their original designs. This attention to detail and craftsmanship extends into playful elements, such as mirrored walls in the restrooms and whimsical photographs of former German chancellor Angela Merkel enjoying kebabs, which cultivate an approachable and lively environment.

    A Fusion of High and Low

    Colterjohn describes Kiez Kebab as a unique intersection of “high” and “low” culture in dining, symbolizing a blend of elevated food concepts in a casual setting. The ambiance, furniture, and even the food serve to subvert expectations and foster a sense of community, encouraging diners to appreciate the artistry behind their meals as they linger in the inviting atmosphere.

    Kiez Kebab serves as a modern homage to traditional fast food, inviting patrons to reflect on both the design and the quality of their meal while enjoying the lively spirit that defines this innovative space in Notting Hill.
