Munich-based architecture firm Holzrausch has recently unveiled a striking two-storey extension to a penthouse in Frankfurt. This innovative design features open-plan living spaces intricately linked to a roof terrace that offers breathtaking views of the city.
A Personal Journey
The inspiration for this transformation stems from the life of Robert Volhard, founder of the architecture and design platform Stylepark. He and his wife Patricia had been residents of the building for 18 years when the time came for an urgent roof replacement. Seizing the opportunity, they enlisted Holzrausch to undertake a comprehensive project that would not only replace the roof but also expand their living space significantly.
Vision for Space
According to Tobias Petri, one of Holzrausch’s co-founders, the clients desired a bright, open home that would function well for their lifestyle while also featuring “a roof garden in the middle of the city.” The architects committed to crafting spaces with high levels of craftsmanship that catered to the precise functional requirements of the owners.
A Contemporary Crown
The original mansard roof of the Wilhelminian-era building was replaced with a modern two-storey extension, described by the architects as a “contemporary crown.” This new structure lends a sense of cohesion with the historic base while offering a distinctly new spatial logic at the upper levels, avoiding the usual constraints of sloping ceilings and compartmentalization found in traditional mansard attics.
Expansive Cohesion
The reconfigured penthouse extends over 400 square meters, distributed across three storeys. The mansard level now encompasses the main living spaces that flow seamlessly onto a balcony, while the upper floor is dedicated to a home gym and office space adorned by expansive terraces—a refuge for relaxation and comfort.
Crafting Atmosphere
Holzrausch collaborated closely with the clients to forge an architectural concept that serves as a calm backdrop for their extensive art and furniture collection. Petri emphasized the aim was to facilitate a distinct shift in atmosphere—one that offers “openness, light, and relaxed, lived-in comfort” as soon as one steps out of the lift.
Material Selection
The carefully chosen material palette fosters a tactile, refined atmosphere, embodying the phrase “arschgemütlich,” which translates to “exceptionally cozy.” Drawing inspiration from Indian architecture firm Studio Mumbai, designers infused warmth and continuity into the spaces through consistent kambala wood paneling alongside a simple palette of solid wood, terrazzo, and brushed stainless steel which will age beautifully over time.
Functional Design
The kitchen space exemplifies this thoughtful design approach, where industrial elements mesh with softer, more natural tones. Utilities are elegantly hidden behind timber fronts, ensuring the kitchen maintains a seamless aesthetic. Bespoke joinery and thoughtful details, such as hand-turned solid wood handles, elevate the crafted feel of the interior.
Unique Connectivity
A pair of contrasting staircases serve as the arteries of the penthouse, each offering a unique experience. The blue-carpeted staircase leading to the main living area creates an intimate atmosphere, while a sculptural spiral staircase ascends to the upper floor, reminiscent of a design encountered by the client in a local boutique. This staircase is dramatically illuminated by a large skylight, further enhancing the sense of space and light.
Emphasizing Natural Light
Natural light flows abundantly through the extension via glazed openings, reinforcing a connection between the interior spaces and the lush surroundings—featuring trees that act as a natural screen. This remarkable integration of indoor and outdoor elements creates a sanctuary within the bustling cityscape of Frankfurt.
