The Issey Miyake store has taken residence in a significant architectural piece on Madison Avenue, which was designed by renowned architect Cass Gilbert in 1928. The contrast between the monumental limestone exterior and the store’s contemporary elements is striking. SO-IL co-founder Jing Liu described the atmosphere as “clean, precise, audacious,” reflecting the innovative ethos of Issey Miyake, who was famous for his experimental approach to fashion.
Open and Inviting Spaces
One of the defining features of the store is its vast, open interior. The design maximizes space while maintaining a minimalist aesthetic. Key elements, such as a continuous aluminum rail that traverses the grand arched windows of the building, integrate seamlessly with the architectural details rather than dominating them. With the majority of the floor area remaining open, customers can easily navigate through custom freestanding aluminum rails and glass-topped tables mounted on castors.
