The 2026 Celtic Triangle Race: Set Sail Again!

The YM Celtic Triangle Race Returns: A Festive Offshore Adventure

The Yachting Monthly Celtic Triangle Race is making waves once again, returning from May 31 to June 11, 2026. This vibrant celebration of sailing, organized by the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club (RCYC), brings together a unique mix of cruising sailors and seasoned offshore racing crews in a festive atmosphere that’s as welcoming as it is competitive.

A Fresh Start for a Cherished Tradition

After a seven-year hiatus, the race was resurrected in 2025, much to the joy of the sailing community. The event bridges the gap between casual cruising sailors—who may never have taken part in offshore racing—and dedicated amateur racing teams from organizations like the Solo Offshore Racing Club and the UK Double Handed Offshore Series.

Last year’s participants shared glowing feedback about the camaraderie built during the race, highlighting how crews helped each other tackle issues on the water, fostering a sense of community and shared passion that’s rare in the racing world.

    Organizers Are All Aboard

Race director Chris Davis expressed enthusiasm about the upcoming event, noting, “The Royal Cornwall Yacht Club is delighted to be able to run the event for a second year. All the arrangements are in place and the event is coming together really well.”

With ample expressions of interest already coming in, spaces are expected to fill quickly. This race not only offers an engaging battle on the open sea but also serves as a qualifying event for the prestigious Azores and Back Race (AZAB), making it a key date on the sailing calendar.

    When and How to Participate

    Event Schedule

The Yachting Monthly Celtic Triangle Race will take place from May 31 to June 11 or 12, 2026, depending on wind conditions. While typically a biennial event, moving it to consecutive years aligns it better with the AZAB timeline.

    The Race Route

The race kicks off at 10:00 AM on May 31 from the Pendennis line in Falmouth. Participants will tackle a 600-mile course divided into three legs:

    • Leg 1: 200 miles to Kinsale, Ireland
    • Leg 2: 300 miles to Treguier, Brittany
    • Leg 3: 100 miles back to Cornwall

Each stopover offers crews two to three days to rest, celebrate their arrival, and prepare for the next leg. Notably, this year the race will finish in Fowey instead of Falmouth due to concurrent events like the Falmouth Classics.

    Who’s Invited?

The race is open to a variety of participant skill levels, focusing on a Corinthian spirit of fun and camaraderie. Competitors range from solo sailors to short-handed teams and seasoned racers, making the event accessible yet competitive.

To register, crews must meet specific qualifications, including completing a 120-mile passage without sight of land. Boats entering the race should be monohulls ranging from 25 feet (7.62 meters) to 48 feet (14.63 meters) with a valid IRC rating.

Prizes will be awarded across various categories, including:

    • First crews with a combined age of over 120 years
    • First crews with members under 30
    • Mixed-gender crews
    • Crews with a novice who has never raced beyond 150 miles

    Limited Spots Available—Register Your Interest!

Attendance for this beloved race is limited, with expectations of accommodating 45-50 boats based on harbour capacities. So far, there are over 80 expressions of interest, ranging from boats like a Rustler 31 and Contessa 32 to an Arcona 435 and Pogo 44.

If you’re eager to be part of this engaging maritime adventure, make sure to register your interest with the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club soon.
