Clars Kicks Off the New Year with a Successful Gallery Auction

Highlights from Clars Auctions’ January Gallery Auction

    Overview of the Auction

On January 23rd, Clars Auctions held an impressive Gallery Auction in Oakland, California, featuring an extensive collection of 645 lots that included furniture, decorative arts, fine art, jewelry, and Asian art. With an exciting sell-through rate of 83%, the auction captivated both seasoned collectors and new bidders alike, revealing the vibrant dynamics of the antiquities market.

The Star of the Show: LaVerne’s Chan Table

Leading the auction with a remarkable price of $16,380 was a circular Chan table crafted by renowned artisans Philip (1908-1988) and Kelvin (b. 1936) LaVerne. Initially estimated to sell between $5,000 and $7,000, this exquisite piece not only surpassed expectations but captivated a Canadian buyer on the phone. Measuring 28 inches high and 40 inches in diameter, the table is adorned with intricate etchings, evidenced by the signatures on both the top and base, showcasing the undeniable craftsmanship of its creators.

    Mira Nakashima’s Timeless Tables

Not to be overlooked, four tables by the influential furniture designer Mira Nakashima also stood out in the auction. These pieces collectively fetched an impressive $38,510. The standout was a Minguren I table made from walnut and sought-after burl, which garnered $11,790. Its free-edged top, measuring 34 inches in diameter, boasts a signature from the artist dated October 10, 2001, and was acquired directly from Nakashima himself. This piece showcases not only the superior quality expected from Nakashima’s work but also its rich provenance.

Following closely was another Minguren I end table that sold for $11,135 to a private collector from the Midwest, while two other Minguren I end tables also realized $9,825 and $5,760 respective prices, confirming Nakashima’s lasting impact on the furniture design landscape.

    The Allure of Fine Art

The fine art sector drew remarkable interest, particularly a watercolor by Louis Comfort Tiffany, which fetched $15,720 from a private collector in Texas. Titled “San Pietro, Venice,” this landscape captured collectors’ attentions not only for its exquisite color palette and technique but also for its historic significance. It underscored the essence of Tiffany’s contributions to American art.

Noteworthy were also an oil painting by Dorr Bothwell titled “The Long Walk to Sunday,” which sold for $8,960, and a lithograph by Thomas Hart Benton, “Wreck of the Ol’ 97,” that sold for $9,170. The presence of these key works not only highlights their artistic merit but also the enduring appeal of American art.

    Intriguing Asian Art Finds

Asian art also made a significant mark during the auction. A stunning sculptural fragment depicting an Asura warrior, carved in the Bayon style, claimed the top spot among Asian offerings at $9,600. This piece has an impressive lineage, having been published in Pratapaditya Pal’s The Sensuous Immortals and previously on loan to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Its sale indicates a continued global interest in Asian art, particularly pieces with a firm provenance.

    Silver and Jewelry Highlights

Among the silver offerings, a Shreve and Company sterling silver flatware service commanded $10,710 due to its elegant craftsmanship and monogrammed handles. Another set, a sterling tea and coffee service, realized $8,820, further reinforcing the allure of well-crafted silver items. The intricate designs and historical craftsmanship of these pieces continue to resonate with collectors.

In the jewelry segment, bidding excitement was sparked by a stainless steel Rolex Submariner watch, which captured a price of $8,190, heading to a private bidder in the Bay Area. Alongside this, an 18K gold Bulova Accutron watch from 1965 and an 18K gold pocket watch added to the jewelry category’s appeal, selling for $7,560 and $6,300 respectively.
