A year after the inaugural Mercy Ships Yachting Day Gala in Cannes, Bob Allen still vividly recalls the moment of realization that ignited his passion for the event.
“It wasn’t really at the end, it was at the beginning,” reflects Allen, founder of Robert Allen Law. As he stepped into the grand ballroom of the Carlton Cannes, he was greeted by a breathtaking sight: 155 guests mingling and buzzing with energy. “It felt overwhelming in a positive sense,” he shares. Allen remembers the feeling as the crowd swelled; he felt a sense of hope, saying, “Wow, we can make a difference. We can make a difference with all these people here.”
The excitement doesn’t end there. The second annual Yachting Day Gala is set to take place on September 9 during the prestigious Cannes Yachting Festival, aiming to make an even greater impact. This year, the event continues to support the non-profit Mercy Ships alongside its remarkable hospital ships, Global Mercy and Africa Mercy, which provide vital surgical care to children and adults in sub-Saharan Africa who lack access to safe medical facilities. The previous gala generated almost $600,000 in funding, which translates to approximately 1,200 life-changing surgeries, emphasizing the profound importance of such contributions. As Allen succinctly puts it, “Six hundred thousand funds 1,200 surgeries approximately.”
The funds raised don’t just cover medical expenses; they also support the spirit of volunteerism aboard the ships. “Among the 1,200 crew and medical staff, none of them are getting paid. They all volunteer,” Allen explains, shining a light on the dedication of individuals committed to humanitarian efforts. This adds an extra layer of significance to the support garnered through the Yachting Day Gala.
While Allen and his law firm support various charitable initiatives, the mission of Mercy Ships resonates deeply with him. “What grabbed me was the human element,” he notes, reflecting on the overarching aim to alleviate human suffering. The conditions treated range from eliminating tumors to correcting bodily deformities. “If you contribute a little bit, you’re going to change one person’s life,” he passionately asserts. This year, guests at the gala will be treated to a powerful film that chronicles the journey of a patient and the transformative surgery enabled by donations.
Looking ahead, Allen envisions the gala expanding further. With 155 attendees last year, he believes that achieving a turnout of 180 to 200 guests is well within reach for this year’s event. However, his aspirations extend beyond mere numbers; he aims for the Yachting Day Gala to evolve into a sustained movement. “In one night, one contribution within a year is going to change somebody’s life and probably their entire family’s life incredibly,” he reflects. “Nothing is this powerful.”
