    Minesto Achieves Record Tidal Energy Output in the Faroe Islands

    Swedish tidal energy innovator Minesto has made strides in renewable energy by setting an impressive electricity generation record in the Faroe Islands. This achievement comes on the heels of an upgrade to its tidal power plant, featuring an enhanced power-take-off (PTO) system designed to optimize energy production throughout the tidal flow cycle.

    Located in Vestmannasund, the newly updated Dragon 4 power plant from Minesto has successfully delivered its highest production levels during the summer months. This achievement has broad implications for the future of tidal energy, showcasing the feasibility of harnessing powerful ocean currents for sustainable electricity generation.

    Dr. Martin Edlund, CEO of Minesto, expressed pride in the results, stating, “We have now demonstrated what we believe to be the most efficient tidal energy power plant in the world in terms of energy conversion performance.” He emphasized that the production performance of the upgraded system aligns closely with their simulation models, strengthening Minesto’s confidence in designing power plants capable of maximizing energy extraction specific to their environments.

    The firm is pleased to report that tidal flows in Vestmanna have turned out to be stronger than historically modeled and anticipated, opening pathways for increased energy production. This is vital for a sustainable energy future, as higher efficiency rates can lead to more substantial reliance on renewables.

    Bernt Erik Westre, CTO at Minesto, highlighted the stability of power production, noting, “The published power production data illustrates stable generation that closely follows the intensity of the tidal currents in Vestmanna at the production site.” He further elaborated that the enhanced Dragon 4 captures energy in proportion to the predicted resource availability, illustrating the system’s significant improvements post-upgrade.

    Previously, the original power-take-off system did not harness the full potential of the tidal flows. Thanks to the engineering team’s innovative approach, a new, more powerful PTO system was developed, leading to increased energy output across all tidal flows. Not only does this result in better energy production, but it also helps to reduce overall system costs, making tidal energy more economically viable.

    Edlund added, “The know-how and technology we have built over the years in integrating a power-take-off system into our unique Dragon systems has been hard-earned.” He pointed out that the dynamic conditions created by tidal cycles and ocean environments make the company’s expertise in this area extraordinarily valuable. With the current proven performance level, the commercial value of Minesto’s intellectual property concerning Dragon hardware and software has significantly increased over the summer months.
