An appraisal well in the Benguela Basin’s Block 24 has confirmed high-quality reservoirs and delivered Angola’s first full drill stem test (DST) on a non-associated gas reservoir.
The collaborative efforts of Sonangol Exploração & Produção and Angola’s National Agency for Petroleum, Gas and Biofuels (ANPG) have reached a notable milestone with the successful drilling and testing of the Katambi-2 appraisal well in Block 24 of the Benguela Basin. This revelation marks a significant advancement for Angola’s upstream gas sector, not only confirming a high-quality non-associated gas reservoir but also pushing the boundaries of the country’s energy exploration capabilities.
Located just 1.3 kilometers from the prior Katambi-1 well, the Katambi-2 well showcases its potential by traversing two productive intervals with a total thickness of approximately 331 meters. These findings identify reservoirs exhibiting favorable quality, characterized by an average porosity ranging from 9% to 12% and commendable permeability. These results are particularly compelling, as they surpass the earlier findings from the Katambi-1 well, drilled in 2014/2015, emphasizing the potential for enhanced exploration and production.
The tests conducted on the Katambi-2 well demonstrated stabilized production figures of 41 million standard cubic feet per day (scfd) of gas alongside 1,160 barrels per day (bbl/d) of condensate. The remarkable news here is the absence of water and hydrogen sulfide (H₂S), factors that typically complicate gas extraction processes. This clean output underlines the well’s economic viability, highlighting its importance in contributing to Angola’s broader energy production goals.
The ANPG proudly pointed out that this appraisal well represents Angola’s inaugural full flow test on a non-associated gas reservoir. The preliminary assessments suggest that Katambi-2 may have the potential to produce over 100 million scfd, reinforcing not just the promise of this find but also the potential transformation of the region into a prolific gas producer.
This achievement follows closely on the heels of the recent production commencement by Azule Energy from what is noted as Angola’s first non-associated gas development offshore. The intersection of these developments is indicative of a burgeoning gas sector in Angola, highlighting a shift towards diversifying the country’s energy portfolio and reducing dependency on oil.
