The Luxe Renaissance of Home Furnishing: A Spotlight on Vishvesh
Under a stunning sunlit glass roof, with the pristine blue sky of Chennai above, Dhruv V. Patel, 33, finds himself at his chosen corner of the Vishvesh store. Spanning an impressive 3,000 square feet, this luxurious haven is nestled away from the cacophony of Cathedral Road. Here, we delve into the relaunch of Vishvesh, a family treasure, now reinvigorated with a focus on “luxury home furnishings.”
A Legacy of Craftsmanship
For over five decades, Vishvesh has been a trailblazer in premium home decor within Chennai. Initiated in 1971 by Dhruv’s grandfather, Jashbhai Patel, and named to honor Dhruv’s father, Vishvesh, the store originally specialized in curtain fabrics. Today, Dhruv, alongside his brother Harsh, steers this legacy towards new horizons. “When homeowners think of curtains, it’s not just about privacy anymore,” he shares. “It’s about adding a touch of elegance and style to the home.”
Expanding Horizons: Beyond Curtains
The store’s transformation transcends its original offerings. As it expands its portfolio to include rugs, bedding, and furniture, Dhruv emphasizes quality and customization. The store showcases an array of options, from custom-made drapery sourced from Jaipur and Mirzapur to premium carpets and statement furniture. “We’ve evolved from just 150 varieties to now offering between 500-600 choices,” he notes. This shift reflects a growing desire for diverse textures and stylish designs from an increasingly knowledgeable customer base.

The Fusion of Function and Aesthetics
Dhruv’s philosophy centers around offering a “luxurious, one-stop solution” to home decor. “By showcasing multiple brands under one roof with significant space for each segment, we aim to provide convenience,” he explains. This approach minimizes the hassle of visiting various vendors for selections, a crucial factor for busy homeowners.
Curtains range from ₹600 to ₹60,000 per meter, illustrating the spectrum of luxury available, while wallpapers start at around ₹55-₹70 per square foot. Vishvesh collaborates with both esteemed Indian brands like Atmosphere and Vaya as well as international giants such as Clarke & Clarke from the UK, ensuring an array of high-quality options for discerning clients.

A New Era of Design
The renovation of the store, designed by renowned architect Indu Sugumar of I and S Studio, took eight months. Sustainability was a cornerstone of this redesign, with LED lighting and over 70% of old plywood repurposed in the false ceiling to minimize waste. The clever use of stretch ceilings enhances the illusion of natural light, while luxurious wall coverings, including options from CMO Paris and Armani, provide exquisite texture.
Creating Community Connections
Recognizing that home decor is often a collaborative process, Dhruv plans to host monthly workshops for artisans at the showroom. This initiative aims to foster community ties while offering a platform for artisans to showcase their crafts and connect with a wider audience.

The Shift to Luxury
The pandemic has shifted consumer preferences towards luxury goods, with Chennai’s homebuyers increasingly gravitating towards high-end options. This burgeoning market, though still in its early stages, presents a unique opportunity for Vishvesh to capitalize on the evolving tastes and expectations of homeowners.
Through a combination of expert curation and a commitment to quality, Vishvesh is redefining the concept of home furnishing in Chennai, promising an amalgamation of comfort, beauty, and luxury that resonates with contemporary audiences.
