At the recent Lakmē Fashion Week x FDCI in Mumbai, SUPIMA, the global authority on premium cotton, forged an exciting partnership with designer Rahul Mishra through AFEW (Art for Everyone). This fashion showcase represented a celebration of luxury cotton, artisanal craftsmanship, and contemporary design, presenting a refined material narrative destined to inspire the fashion world.

This presentation marked not just a moment in time, but a significant milestone in Rahul Mishra’s design journey, coinciding with the 20th anniversary of his debut on the NIF Global GenNext platform back in 2006. This event underscored two decades of ongoing design practice, experimentation, and evolution, setting the stage for the launch of his eponymous label in 2013. AFEW reflects on this extensive journey, contemplating the designer’s evolution while honoring the enduring values that remain foundational to his work.

Deep-rooted in a commitment to handloom practices and the rich textile heritage of India, the showcased collection harmoniously blended traditional craft techniques with contemporary fashion sensibilities. The incorporation of SUPIMA cotton as the foundation spotlighted the fiber’s exceptional softness, strength, and versatility. Further expanding this material exploration, the collection intriguingly included lightweight SUPIMA denim, which exemplified cotton’s adaptability across a multitude of styles and occasions.

    Design Elements

Signature hand embroidery was central to the collection, highlighting the atelier’s dedication to human labor, precision, and intricate storytelling through surface design. The motifs infused within the garments drew inspiration from the cotton ecosystem, featuring depictions of cotton buds, flowers, and even insects that reflect the realities of cotton cultivation. Notable elements included marigolds and mustard flowers—often grown in tandem with cotton to naturally attract pests—transformed here into symbolic design elements within the collection.

    Embroidery Close-Up

The event saw Bollywood actress Ananya Panday grace the runway as she opened the show in an eye-catching all-white ensemble that beautifully captured the garden theme of Mishra’s collection. Dressed in a glossy oversized blazer, a pleated ivory skirt, and a crisp white shirt embellished with delicate dragonfly motifs, her presence added a playful, sassy edge to the runway, engaging the audience and media alike.

In reflecting on this significant partnership, Marc Lewkowitz, President and CEO of SUPIMA, expressed his excitement: “SUPIMA’s relationship with Rahul Mishra goes back to the very first SUPIMA Design Lab that was organized in Paris 10 years ago. SUPIMA could not be more excited to have that relationship continue and expand to include a full collection of SUPIMA looks for AFEW Rahul Mishra. We look forward to growing this partnership with incredible opportunities in the dynamic Indian market.”

    Fashion Showcase

Adding to this sentiment, Rahul Mishra remarked: “Twenty years ago, the GenNext platform gave me the courage to imagine a different future for Indian craft. This showcase with SUPIMA feels like a natural continuation of that journey. Cotton has always been deeply connected to our country’s textile heritage, and working with SUPIMA allowed us to explore its lightness, strength, and adaptability in new ways while remaining rooted in handloom and hand embroidery.”

    Runway Show

The SUPIMA Presents AFEW Rahul Mishra showcase at Lakmē Fashion Week x FDCI not only highlighted a commitment to craftsmanship-led design but also emphasized responsible materiality within the evolving language of Indian fashion on a global stage.
