Saudi Arabia Unveils AMAALA: A Premier Coastal Development for Sustainable Luxury and Yachting
Saudi Arabia is setting a new standard in luxury tourism with its ambitious coastal development, AMAALA. Positioned along the northwestern shores of the Red Sea, AMAALA aims to be a sustainable luxury destination and yachting hub in line with the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 initiative. This remarkable project not only seeks to redefine the local tourism landscape but is also projected to create up to 50,000 jobs and contribute around SAR 11 billion (approximately USD 3 billion) to the nation’s GDP, according to the Economic Impact Assessment.
AMAALA Triple Bay: The Centerpiece of Transformation
At the heart of this transformative initiative is AMAALA Triple Bay, featuring a stunning 68-kilometre stretch of unspoiled coastline. The vision for Triple Bay is clear: to create a “year-round wellness and lifestyle destination” with 12 exquisite resorts, spearheaded by Red Sea Global.
The centerpiece of the maritime offerings is the Triple Bay Marina, accompanied by the AMAALA Yacht Club (AYC). Unveiled at the illustrious Monaco Yacht Show, this state-of-the-art marina aims to accommodate 116 berths for yachts up to 140 metres in length and is designed to offer world-class facilities and services.
AYC: A Modern Marvel
The AMAALA Yacht Club is a $2 billion investment, designed by the renowned architectural firm HKS, and draws inspiration from the region’s striking rock formations. Set to open its doors later this year, the club’s comprehensive sailing program aims to establish it as a global sailing hub, hosting significant international events, including The Ocean Race Grand Finale in 2027. This initiative reflects the Kingdom’s commitment to strengthening its position in the competitive world of yachting.
A Unique Alternative to the Caribbean
The project has sparked considerable interest among yacht owners, with Brett Armitage, the group head of global branding and marketing at Red Sea Global, highlighting it as an appealing cost-effective alternative to traditional Caribbean destinations. The easy access from the Mediterranean via the Suez Canal is a significant advantage, making this largely uncharted coastline an exciting option even for local Saudis.
Armitage also acknowledges ongoing security improvements in the Southern Red Sea, emphasizing the collaborative efforts of the Saudi Tourism Authority and Red Sea Authority in facilitating yacht permits and insurance. “This project is more than just us as a developer; it’s a Kingdom project,” he asserts.
Luxurious Amenities and Unique Offerings
The initial phase of AMAALA Triple Bay includes the opening of eight luxury hotels this year, alongside premier golf courses, high-end retail spaces, and fine dining establishments. Some standout resorts in the lineup include Clinique La Prairie, Jayasom Wellness Resort, Rosewood, Six Senses, Equinox, Four Seasons, The Ritz-Carlton, and Nammos Resort. Each resort promises bespoke wellness and lifestyle experiences featuring medical programs, holistic therapies, luxurious spa services, and curated cultural activities.
Emphasis on Sustainability
AMAALA’s commitment to sustainability sets it apart from other luxury developments. With an abundance of natural attractions, including pristine beaches and vibrant coral reefs, the destination aims to cap visitor numbers at 500,000 annually to preserve its natural beauty. In alignment with its ambitious eco-friendly vision, the project is expected to operate entirely on renewable energy, targeting a zero-carbon footprint.
Central to this mission is the Corallium Marine Life Institute, located adjacent to the AMAALA Yacht Club. This institute will serve as a global hub for marine research, education, and conservation. Its objectives include protecting vital ecosystems such as mangroves, seagrass beds, and coral reefs, with the goal of enhancing Red Sea biodiversity by 30% by the year 2040.
A New Standard in Eco-Tourism
For Brett Armitage, the focus on sustainability and regenerative tourism sets AMAALA apart in the crowded landscape of luxury developments. His extensive experience in the tourism sector has left him impressed with the seriousness of this eco-conscious initiative. “What really has blown me away is how seriously we’re taking all this,” he remarked.
As Saudi Arabia charts its course towards a new era of sustainable tourism, AMAALA stands as a beacon of innovation and elegance, ready to captivate luxury travelers and yachting enthusiasts from around the globe.
