Recreational Vessels: Fusing Elegance, Luxury, and Modern Design

A Design Born from Lobster Boats

The boating landscape changed dramatically in 1994 when Hinckley launched its first Picnic Boat, which seamlessly combined the rugged design of Maine lobster boats with the elegance of yacht craftsmanship. The result was a versatile vessel suited for picnics, regatta viewing, and island explorations. It had to embody safety, style, and easy handling—a trifecta that resonated with many boating enthusiasts.

The breakthrough of the Picnic Boat was its jet drive. This innovative propulsion system eliminated the exposure of propellers, allowing the boat to navigate in just 18 inches of water. This shallow draft opened up access to secluded beaches, protected coves, and hidden sandbanks, greatly enhancing the boat’s versatility, all made manageable through joystick controls that made piloting a breeze.

Hinckley revolutionized boat-making by adopting SCRIMP (Seemann Composites Resin Infusion Moulding Process), a vacuum-assisted resin infusion technology initially created for wind turbine blades. Unlike traditional methods that involve manually layering fiberglass with resin, SCRIMP ensures an even distribution of resin across multiple layers under vacuum, resulting in a hull that is lighter, stronger, and free from flaws. This technology produced stiffer and more efficient boats, laying the foundation for Hinckley’s legacy of innovation.

Meet the Newcomer: Picnic Boat 39

Hinckley’s commitment to quality remains evident as they continue to build only 35 boats each year, with about 10 of those being Picnic Boats. Their latest model, the Picnic Boat 39, showcases a blend of tradition and modern advancements.

The Picnic Boat 39 features three interconnected seating areas, an upgraded galley outfitted with refrigeration, and a sleek, single-curved windshield. Forward seating and a cleverly designed sliding window facilitate easy access to the deck, eliminating the need to navigate narrow side decks.

A suite of new technologies enhances the boating experience, including JetStick 4 with Dockhold® and G-lock®, making docking practically effortless. The boat’s shallow-draft Hamilton HTX jets provide agility, while twin Volvo D6 diesels enable cruising speeds up to 34 knots.

Hinckley’s VP of Marketing, Scott Bryant, encapsulates the experience: “Every seat is the best seat in the house.”

    Picnic Boats in New Zealand

Though picnic boats are a rarity in New Zealand, local designers have embraced the concept in their own unique ways. Notably, in 2012, Dibley Yacht Design developed the P25 Picnic Boat– designed specifically for a South Island owner who wished to explore the region’s stunning lakes. This model features classic 1920s curves and an efficient hull, focusing on family-friendly functionality and offering options for a cuddy cabin.

Additionally, artist and sailor David Barker reimagined a Logan 33 into Feather, which was constructed in Whangārei and Kerikeri. This transformation involved swapping out the traditional diesel for a quiet outboard and utilizing lightweight composite materials, resulting in a sociable, efficient cruiser perfect for day trips in the Bay of Islands, mirroring Hinckley’s philosophy of blending artistry with practicality. More than Just a Day Boat

So what sets a picnic boat apart from a conventional day boat? While day boats serve any short journey on water, picnic boats are specifically tailored for leisurely outings, integrating luxury features with shallow-draft propulsion and communal spaces. These vessels often include a covered helm, galley, and toilet facility, transforming them into floating gathering spots that prioritize sociability and comfort.

In New Zealand, where traditional launches, bluewater yachts, and trailer boats dominate the scene, picnic boats are still a novelty. Nevertheless, their charm is evident: they offer easy maneuverability, graceful lines, and an inviting atmosphere that elevates a simple afternoon afloat into a memorable experience.

Like an ideal picnic, the best picnic boats provide a perfect blend of companionship, serene surroundings, and effortless enjoyment—only here, the basket contains cutting-edge technology, carbon composites, and a hint of classic elegance.
