Maritime Electric Advancement: Baltic Yachts and Molabo Demonstrate the Potential of 48 Volts

The Future of Sailing: Baltic Yachts and Molabo’s Innovative Partnership

At the forefront of nautical innovation, Baltic Yachts is setting a new standard for sailing vessels with its integration of Molabo’s state-of-the-art 48-volt electric motors. This collaboration aims to revolutionize sailing systems, making them smarter, quieter, and more efficient. The Finnish yacht builder has been working closely with Molabo for several years, employing their technology across a wide spectrum of functionalities, from propulsion systems to energy generation.

    Advanced Electric Propulsion

The adoption of Molabo’s ARIES motors marks a pivotal shift in onboard operations. These motors are engineered to power not only the yacht’s propulsion system but also deck equipment, keel, rudder, and trim-control actuators, along with bow and stern thrusters. A key feature of the ARIES drive is its RPM-controlled version, which offers immediate responsiveness and precise control while minimizing noise and vibrations.

With a focus on low-voltage systems, Baltic Yachts has tapped into the benefits of using a 48-volt motor. This decision alleviates the complexity often associated with high-voltage systems, making maintenance simpler and safer for crew members.

    Enhanced Sustainability Onboard

“Electric-powered auxiliary systems are a natural upgrade for oceangoing yachts,” expresses Kim Kolam, a senior electrical engineer at Baltic Yachts. The installation of these motors allows essential onboard systems to operate efficiently while sailing, substantially reducing the reliance on engines and generators. The integration of a high-capacity battery bank ensures ample energy storage, which is crucial for powering amenities when the yacht is anchored.

Hybrid Systems: A Step Towards Efficiency

Baltic Yachts is also leveraging the ARIES drives for hybrid systems that benefit activities such as anchoring and harbor maneuvering. These setups harness renewable energy even while the yacht is under sail, showcasing the versatility of the motors. By running the motors at reduced output levels, sailors can subtly boost the yacht’s speed, enhancing performance and efficiency through optimized sail trim.

Andreas Baumgardt, Molabo’s head of marine ecosystems and applications, discusses how this technique opens up new possibilities: “Being able to apply just 200–500 W of electric thrust to maintain momentum or optimize airflow can significantly enhance sailing capabilities.” With the potential for up to 50 kW of power available at just 48 V, even large yachts can experience improved performance.

Expanding Horizons: New Developments in Electric Drives

Building on its success with low-voltage systems, Molabo has recently introduced additional innovations, including a 50-kW jet drive and a 48 V serial hybrid system coupled with Fischer Panda’s lightweight AGT-series generators. These advancements cater to vessels that require endurance and reliability, particularly in offshore conditions, all while maintaining a focus on safety and ease of serviceability.

“Low-voltage electrification is becoming increasingly adaptable,” notes Adrian Patzak, COO of Molabo. “These innovations empower builders to electrify systems, support extensive cruising, and manage high-demand applications without the challenges associated with high-voltage complexity.”

    Visual Innovations

The aesthetic appeal of Baltic Yachts is complemented by these technical enhancements. The seamless integration of advanced electric systems not only elevates performance but also ensures that the vessels remain stunningly sleek and environmentally responsible.

Baltic Yachts continues to innovate, balancing practicality with cutting-edge technology, making them a leader in the modern sailing industry. For more information about their pioneering work and cutting-edge designs, visit Baltic Yachts and Molabo.

    A Glimpse into the Future
