Maharashtra: The Hub of Electric Vehicle Demand in India
Maharashtra has firmly established itself as the leading state for electric vehicles (EVs) in India, showcasing remarkable growth in sales of zero-emission cars, SUVs, and MPVs. In the calendar year 2025 (CY2025), this dynamic state doubled its electric vehicle sales compared to the previous year, marking a significant milestone in the transition towards sustainable transportation.
A Surge in Electric Passenger Vehicle Sales
In CY2025, Maharashtra sold an impressive 30,596 electric passenger vehicles, a staggering increase of 103% from the 15,038 units sold in CY2024. This impressive feat accounted for 17% of the total e-passenger vehicle sales across India, up from 15% in the previous year. The bustling metropolis of Mumbai, Maharashtra’s financial capital, has emerged as a key market driving this demand.
Dominance in Multiple Segments
The state has not only excelled in electric passenger vehicles but has also retained its top position for retail sales of electric two-wheelers (e-2Ws) and electric commercial vehicles (e-CVs). In CY2025, 216,148 e-2Ws were sold in Maharashtra—a modest 3% increase, capturing a 17% market share. For e-CVs, sales climbed to 3,971 units, reflecting a 72% increase and a substantial 25% market share.
Despite this success, Maharashtra ranks 10th in the sales of electric three-wheelers (e-3Ws), selling 15,792 units, which represents 2% of the total e-3W market. Here, Uttar Pradesh takes the lead, highlighting varying preferences across the Indian market.
The Bigger Picture: Overall EV Sales
When assessing overall electric vehicle sales across all categories, Maharashtra accounted for 266,524 units in CY2025, securing a 12% market share to hold the number two position in India. In contrast, Uttar Pradesh leads with a staggering 404,908 EVs sold, owing in large part to its dominance in the e-3W segment.
According to data from the Vahan portal, as of January 7, 2026, India witnessed a total of 177,054 electric cars and e-SUVs sold in CY2025, representing an impressive 77% year-on-year growth. This surge signals an encouraging trend toward adopting electric mobility solutions, as many leading manufacturers reported significant year-on-year increases.
Regional Insights: The Top States for Electric Vehicles
The latest data reveals that the top seven states—including Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, and Rajasthan—alongside Delhi, collectively accounted for a staggering 77% of India’s total electric passenger vehicle sales in CY2025. While Maharashtra leads with its impressive growth, states like Karnataka and Kerala also showed notable gains, although some lost market share to the expanding Maharashtra landscape.
Karnataka, for instance, sold 20,977 units, reflecting a 48% increase but seeing its market share decrease from 14% to 12%. Kerala, meanwhile, managed to maintain its 11% share with 19,158 units sold, achieving a robust 73% growth.
Leading Manufacturers in the Maharashtra Market
Delving deeper into manufacturer-specific performances, the data highlights how strategic and essential Maharashtra has become for electric vehicle manufacturers. Tata Motors, for instance, reported selling 10,493 e-PVs in the state, which is a commendable 15% of its national sales. Meanwhile, JSW MG Motor saw a remarkable 124% growth, with sales reaching 8,573 units. Mahindra & Mahindra also thrived with a staggering 540% increase, delivering 6,511 e-SUV units.
The collaboration among these top players reflects the competitive landscape within the electric vehicle market, positioning Maharashtra as a crucial region for fleet growth and brand visibility.
Emerging Players and Luxury Sector Growth
Maharashtra has also become a focal point for new entrants in the EV market. Tesla sold 140 units of its Model Y electric SUV, which accounted for 62% of its total sales in India. Remarkably, VinFast also found traction, with 144 units of its e-SUVs sold in Maharashtra.
The luxury electric vehicle sector has not been left behind. In CY2025, buyers in Maharashtra took delivery of 1,415 luxury electric cars, SUVs, and MPVs. This growth of 76% year-on-year underscores Maharashtra’s role as a key market for luxury EV buyers, representing 28% of the national luxury electric vehicle sales.
Future Outlook and Consumer Demand
With the increasing intensity of competition among leading manufacturers like Tata Motors, JSW MG Motor India, and Mahindra & Mahindra, the stage is set for an exciting year ahead. Over ten new electric passenger vehicles are set to launch in CY2026, including the much-anticipated Maruti Suzuki e-Vitara.
The data and trends reflect not only a thriving EV market in Maharashtra but also provide insights into consumer preferences and the potential for rapid growth in emerging regions. Electric vehicles are no longer a niche market confined to urban buyers; they are becoming integral to the broader transportation landscape across diverse segments in India.
