The 2023 Abu Dhabi International Boat Show is making waves with its newly introduced Innovation Zone, a vibrant space dedicated to showcasing the future of CleanTech in the marine world. This exciting new feature is held in partnership with Yachting Ventures, a startup hub that is actively supporting sustainable innovations in the leisure marine and yachting industries.
From November 9 to November 12, 2023, the annual trade show will unfold at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC). The Innovation Zone will host 16 pioneering CleanTech startups, all set to present their cutting-edge solutions. Among them are notable names such as Evoy, Aerofoils, RAD Propulsion, Ripple Boats, and Navier. These startups embody the spirit of innovation and sustainability driving the modern boating industry.
The Innovation Zone this year will be sponsored by Borrow A Boat, often dubbed the “Airbnb of boats.” This innovative platform provides access to over 45,000 boats across more than 65 countries, enabling users to experience boating without the burdens of ownership. Matt Ovenden, the founder of Borrow A Boat, expressed enthusiasm for their partnership, emphasizing the importance of driving growth and sustainability in yachting. He remarked, “This is an opportunity for some incredible brands to showcase their products, and we are excited to be part of making this happen to bring through innovation in the boating industry.”
Electric Boats
Among the innovators, you can find ZeroJet, which specializes in electric jet propulsion systems designed specifically for small boats. Their plug-and-play solutions promise not only ease of installation for boat builders but also deliver a serene yet exhilarating experience on the water.
Ripple Boats is preparing to unveil a fully electric 10-meter yacht, aiming to redefine luxury with a commitment to sustainability. On another front, Navier showcases America’s first farthest-reaching fully electric hydrofoiling boat, capable of flying four feet above water for over 75 nautical miles with a quick recharge time of just one hour.
The future of luxury electric boating is being reimagined by The Silent Power, which features ‘The Icon’—a collaboration between Tyde and BMW. This innovative vessel combines advanced foiling technology with sustainable energy use. Regent takes it a step further with their zero-emission Seagliders, which can switch between hull, hydrofoil, or flight modes, thus revolutionizing maritime transport.
Voltaic focuses on driving the decarbonization of recreational boating through innovative design and battery architecture, while Finnish startup Elvene is making waves with its self-sustaining solar electric boats. This option offers all the advantages of electric boating without the need for an elaborate charging infrastructure.
Electric Outboard Engines
In the realm of electric propulsion, RAD Propulsion stands out with its smart electric products, starting with the RAD 40 model designed for high performance. Meanwhile, Evoy is dedicated to supplying powerful electric motor systems that emphasize fast charging and environmental sustainability.
Water Sports Innovations
For water sports enthusiasts, Aerofoils is developing what they claim to be the safest and most performant electric foil board on the market, the Audi e-tron eFoil, crafted in Germany for unmatched performance. Simultaneously, Floating Padel is introducing environmentally friendly floating Padel courts, merging sports with unique aquatic experiences, and aiming to create multi-functional platforms on the water.
Emerging Technologies
Among the cutting-edge technologies on display, AnchorGuardian revolutionizes anchoring safety by providing real-time intelligence about the anchoring procedure to sailors. Charge Made Good (CMG) offers a transformative app for sailing vessels, promising fossil fuel-free journeys with expedient transit times and enhanced onboard energy availability. Best of all, the app is free and open source, making it accessible for existing yachts and modern hybrids alike.
Additionally, Homeport presents a unique solution free from chemicals, utilizing ultrafine bubbles that act on pollutants and toxins in the water, contributing to cleaner marine environments. Ankor Software supports CleanTech initiatives by providing discounts to electric boat manufacturers, while Washdown, founded by ex-superyacht crew, offers natural biotech cleaning solutions that assure high performance without compromising sustainability.

As Gabbi Richardson, founder of Yachting Ventures, observes, “The Innovation Hub will be a pivotal platform, connecting startups and entrepreneurs with customers, investors, and industry experts—enabling them to showcase their ideas and drive positive change within the sector.” This commitment to fostering innovation is crucial as the maritime industry continues to evolve within the ever-changing landscape of the Middle East.
