LG Energy Solution Inks Major Battery Supply Deal with Mercedes-Benz
South Korean battery manufacturing powerhouse LG Energy Solution has recently made headlines by sealing a new battery supply agreement with the renowned car manufacturer Mercedes-Benz. Valued at 2.06 trillion won, or about US$1.4 billion, this deal marks the fourth significant contract signed between the two companies in a mere two years, showcasing the rapidly strengthening collaboration.
The Scope of the Agreement
Under the terms of this latest agreement, LG Energy Solution will commence battery supply to Mercedes-Benz starting from March 2028 through June 2035. While the specific battery types and volume details remain under wraps, analysts project that the order will likely feature between 15–20 gigawatt hours (GWh) of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries. This chemistry is gaining traction in mid-range and entry-level electric vehicles, making it a strategic fit for both companies as they navigate the evolving EV landscape.
Expanding Partnership
This most recent contract adds to a series of growing commitments between LG Energy and Mercedes-Benz. In October 2022, LG Energy signed a notable contract for 50.5 GWh of battery supply. This was swiftly followed by two additional agreements announced in September 2023, which together amounted to 75 GWh and 32 GWh, bringing the combined value of these deals to around $11 billion. With the latest contract, LG Energy’s total supply commitments to Mercedes-Benz now soar to approximately $16 billion.
Production and Technological Enhancements
As part of its growth strategy, LG Energy Solution is not only enhancing its capacity to produce LFP batteries, but it is also ramping up the production of more advanced high-energy-density batteries. The company is focusing on the development of 46-series cylindrical cells designed to meet the needs of an expanding array of Mercedes-Benz EV models. These advancements are essential as the auto industry shifts toward increased efficiency and sustainability.
Strategic Shift Towards Mass-Market EVs
Simultaneously, this agreement comes at a pivotal time for Mercedes-Benz, which is reportedly pivoting away from a strictly luxury-focused electric vehicle lineup. The move aligns with a broader industry trend toward creating more affordable, mass-market electric vehicles without compromising on quality and innovation. LG Energy’s diverse product lineup ensures that it is well-positioned to support this strategic transition, offering solutions that cater to a wider consumer demographic.
Local Production to Support Global Demand
A significant aspect of this partnership is that the LFP batteries for the new contract will be produced at LG Energy’s state-of-the-art facilities located in the United States and Europe. This localized production approach not only meets the growing demand for electric vehicles in key markets but also reflects a commitment to regional economic development.
Strengthening Collaborations
An official from LG Group expressed optimism about the partnership, stating, “Our partnership with Mercedes-Benz is strengthening across our vehicle component businesses.” The commitment to ongoing cooperation highlights a shared vision for expanding across the broader electric-vehicle ecosystem, including various battery applications and potential innovations. This collaboration is expected to contribute significantly to both enterprises, fostering growth within the dynamic electric vehicle sector.
As LG Energy Solution and Mercedes-Benz embark on this ambitious journey together, the implications for the electric vehicle market will undoubtedly be profound. With strategic contracts and technological advancements on the horizon, both companies are positioning themselves at the forefront of an industry experiencing transformative growth.
