Lisi Fracchia: From Teacher to Gemologist and Luxury Jewelry Designer

When Lisi Fracchia signed up for her first course on gems at Madrid’s Instituto Gemológico Español, she embarked on a journey that would forever change her life. Originally from Argentina, Fracchia moved to Spain in 2005, where she was a teacher and a new mother. Despite juggling her studies and family life, she embraced the challenge. “I went because they allowed me to take my daughter,” she recalls, highlighting the flexibility of the institute that made her initiation into gemology possible.

    Nurturing a Passion for Gemology

The supportive atmosphere at the Instituto, coupled with an inspiring professor, kindled Fracchia’s passion for pearls and gemstones. “It is so important to have a good professor,” she emphasizes, crediting her instructor for introducing her to the love of gemology. Her first collection of 60 necklaces sold out in just 20 minutes at a paella lunch hosted by the International Newcomers Club, marking the launch of her jewelry career.

Upon receiving positive feedback, Fracchia knew she had to pursue further education in gemology. She continued her studies even after moving to Brazil, where she learned from André Leite. During this time, she cleverly financed her education by translating a gemology book, receiving gemstones in return, which she then sold to fund her burgeoning business.

    The Breakthrough at IberJoya

Fracchia’s major breakthrough came when she returned to Madrid. Fresh off the plane, she was urged by colleagues to enter a competition at IberJoya. Although initially hesitant, fearing it was meant for younger designers, she reluctantly signed up just in time and ended up winning the award in 2014. The victory offered her a chance to exhibit at the prestigious IFEMA Madrid during the IberJoya fair, but Fracchia faced a dilemma: she had little to display. She reached out to friends for borrowed pieces, ensuring she had something to show to the world.

Despite her newfound success, Fracchia’s thirst for knowledge remained insatiable. “If I tell you how long it takes to study gemology, nobody will want to,” she laughs, indicating that the learning never truly ends. She advocates for a symbiotic relationship between jewelers and gemologists, emphasizing the importance of understanding gemstones to create beautiful pieces without risking damage.

    An International Luxury Jewelry Brand

Her recognition escalated when she introduced the Spanish mineral sphalerite into the jewelry market, previously overlooked due to its low hardness. This innovative approach caught the attention of Queen Letizia of Spain, who wore Fracchia’s sphalerite earrings during an official visit to the U.S. Fracchia expressed her surprise at the royal interest, especially since her designs also caught the eye of Queen Maxima of the Netherlands.

Beyond royal endorsements, her jewelry has adorned celebrities at prestigious events like the Oscars and Goya Awards. Since winning the IberJoya award, her creations have gained accolades worldwide, and she’s been serving as the ambassador of Marca Pais Argentina in Spain since 2022.

    Mentorship and Expanding Influence

Despite her achievements, Fracchia remains grounded, dedicating time to mentoring young designers in Latin and South America, aiming to help them introduce their work to the EU market. Her travels across Colombia, Bolivia, and Paraguay revealed a wealth of talent among emerging designers eager to dive into the jewelry business.

Amid her hectic schedule, balancing mentorship, travel, and design, Fracchia finds ways to nurture her creative spirit. “I have this notebook with a pencil by my bed,” she shares, illustrating her commitment to keeping the muse alive. Even at odd hours, she takes the time to sketch her ideas, often influenced by gemstones themselves.

Her collaborative ventures extend to working with clothing designers, creating pieces that complement their collections seamlessly. Such partnerships, including with Maison Mesa, showcase her versatility and adaptability, facilitating impressive showcases at events in Madrid, Costa Rica, and Dubai.

    A Passion for Belonging

Fracchia’s newest collection, Mi lugar en el mundo, encapsulates her deep emotional connection to home and belonging. This collection embodies the essence of various places meaningful to individuals, making each piece resonate on a personal level. “I do this because it’s a passion. I love doing it,” she states, which is palpably reflected in her intricate designs.

With Fracchia, every gemstone tells a story, and her love for her craft translates into every collection she embraces. The intricacies of her journey from a new student to a renowned designer serve as an inspiring narrative, highlighting the passion that fuels her continuous evolution in the world of luxury jewelry.
