Starting with a neutral, live-sawn white oak from Kristynik Hardwood Flooring, designer Jenna Barton prioritized careful editing in the crafting of this home. “Instead of layering competing ideas, we carved out thoughtful moments where special details could shine,” she explains. This approach involved selecting materials that would withstand the test of time, suitable for a bustling family environment—think natural stone, unlacquered brass, and durable finishes. The chosen palette leans traditional yet feels refreshing, incorporating patinaed brass, warm woods, and custom detailing, all while emphasizing stone for the floors and countertops. “The theme throughout was ‘balance,’” Barton reflects, “between modern and traditional, luxury and livability.”

Arguably, the kitchen stands as the pièce de résistance of this design narrative. With its bold brass hood and heavily veined marble backsplash, it certainly makes an impression. Nevertheless, Barton ensured that impactful statements were balanced by subtle details, including sleek downlights and brass island feet. The fluted glass cabinet fronts not only contribute texture and softness but also add a touch of romantic flair. “It brings movement and light to the cabinetry without being too precious or decorative—exactly the kind of quiet detail we love,” she adds.

“We believe in letting the materials speak,” Barton says, citing this kitchen with a custom brass hood and honed Arabescato Vagli backsplash. “Every space includes quiet details that reveal themselves over time—nothing flashy, but everything intentional.” Interiors photography by CHASE DANIELS

Some of the property’s intelligent design features are understated yet remarkably functional, including a hybrid scullery/office and a small loft play space, accessed via a spiral staircase from the breakfast area. Barton opted for primarily new furnishings, sourced through her studio, to establish a consistent tone throughout the home. Custom pieces, such as a one-of-a-kind dining table and an entry console, add a deeply personal touch, making the house feel uniquely tailored to its inhabitants.

While the residence could seamlessly integrate into the landscape of most metropolitan areas, Barton notes that it suits Austin particularly well. “Austin’s design language often marries casual sophistication with natural ease—and this home encapsulates that duality,” she says. The use of raw, natural materials is intentional, as these elements are only destined to improve with age. Flow and functionality were prioritized for a busy family life, ensuring each space feels authentic and reflective of Austin’s creative spirit. A nod towards the city’s identity as the “Live Music Capital of the World” is also evident, as the home showcases a collection of framed Pearl Jam posters in the office and wallpaper that Barton customized with album spines, celebrating the couple’s favorite music.

At its core, this project exemplifies the collaborative nature of design, bringing together various individuals and their visions to create an aesthetically pleasing and functional space. “This home tells the story of trust, collaboration, and refinement,” Barton expresses. The final outcome resonates with the owners’ essence, beautifully balanced and personal. “When we walked the clients through their finished home, their emotions were palpable—the years of hard work and believing in the process came to fruition as beautifully as they’d hoped. Creating a home that feels like a reflection of the people who live there is the ultimate success for us,” she concludes.
