Albany Redefines Luxury Living in the Bahamas
An Icon of Opulence
Albany, a 600-acre luxurious private resort, stands as a testament to refined living in an exclusive corner of New Providence, The Bahamas. Since its inception in 2010, Albany has transcended the traditional tropical getaway, evolving into a vibrant community for the world’s elite. Designed by renowned architects such as Morris Adjmi, Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), and OOAK Architects, the resort boasts architecture that seamlessly merges with its lush landscapes and shimmering turquoise waters. The blend of visionary design and bespoke interiors not only elevates the living experience but also creates a sanctuary that effortlessly combines privacy with breathtaking beauty.
During a recent visit, Designboom explored Albany’s notable architecture and interiors, engaging in insightful conversations with Damien Michelmore, COO of Albany, and Mohammad Rajab, Director of Design. Their insights illuminated the thought-provoking processes behind Albany’s extraordinary architectural choices.

Resort for Stars, Built by Starchitects
From the very beginning, Albany embraced a philosophy of architectural innovation designed to elevate luxury living. The resort’s marina, capable of docking 71 luxury yachts, was masterfully crafted by Robert A.M. Stern. This initial endeavor included three premier residences: Orchid by Morris Adjmi, Gemini by HKS Architects, and Charles by Gwathmey Siegel & Associates Architects. Since then, the development has expanded, introducing new delights like Lantern and Tetris, both by Morris Adjmi, and Cube and Honeycomb by BIG.
Continuing this architectural evolution, Coral and Cirrus, designed by BIG and Squire and Partners respectively, are slated to complete the marina’s offering by 2026. This collaboration among world-renowned firms forms the bedrock of Albany’s ethos, where luxury is constantly reimagined against the backdrop of the Bahamas’ extraordinary natural beauty.

Crafting Cohesion Through Collaboration
Albany’s architectural success stems from a commitment to collaboration; architects are selected flexibly to align with each phase’s distinct needs, be it through direct invitations or design competitions. For example, BIG showcased multiple designs for the Honeycomb residence, ensuring the final outcome proudly reflects Albany’s aesthetic while pushing architectural boundaries through its innovative sunken pool façade.

The over-water apartments blur the divide between indoor and outdoor living, incorporating spacious balconies and floor-to-ceiling windows that flood interiors with natural light. Moreover, meticulously designed natural ventilation systems enhance the connection between architecture and the island’s pristine environment.

Bespoke Interior Design Decisions
While stunning architecture captivates at Albany, it’s the commitment to customization that sets it apart. The resort offers residents the unique opportunity to tailor their homes to meet their exact specifications, creating a personal oasis reflective of individual tastes. From minimalist modern to extravagant maximalist styles, residents have total creative control over finishes, furnishings, and layouts.
A staggering 90% of homeowners collaborate with Albany’s in-house design team based in Orlando, Florida, ensuring their homes harmonize with their lifestyle. For those seeking deeper personalization, bringing in external designers is also an option, allowing every detail to be meticulously curated, from custom millwork to high-end plaster finishes.

The construction timeline typically spans 12-16 months for a standard 4,000 sq. ft. residence, but custom projects can extend up to two years. Albany’s established relationships with local subcontractors mitigate the logistical challenges of island construction, ensuring that each residence conforms to the highest standards of quality.
Under the guidance of Mohammad Rajab, the in-house design team continuously adapts and innovates, exemplified by unique features like the putting green atop a penthouse in the Tetris project, born from ongoing dialogues between designers and residents.

Luxury Amenities Support Year-Round Residents
As Albany has flourished, its master plan has evolved to accommodate burgeoning demand among an elite community of celebrities, entrepreneurs, and families. Initially, the focus was on cultivating a critical mass to support amenities like restaurants, coffee shops, a recording studio, and a financial center. These communal spaces nurture a sense of belonging among residents.
In a post-COVID world, Albany has witnessed a surge in demand, driven largely by the rise of remote work. The resort now represents an ideal choice for those desiring both luxury and connectivity. This shift has prompted the development of a 25-acre campus featuring educational facilities, a comprehensive sports complex, and a golf academy adjacent to a course that has hosted Tiger Woods’ PGA Tour events. These offerings have transformed Albany from a mere vacation spot into a vibrant, year-round community.

As Albany continues to unfold, its adaptable master plan embraces a flexible approach that meets the evolving needs of its residents. New amenities are introduced based on community feedback, solidifying Albany’s status at the pinnacle of luxury living, privacy, and exclusivity.
Privacy Meets Community Engagement
At Albany, privacy takes precedence, particularly given the prominence of many residents. Strict policies regulate photography and autographs, fostering a sanctuary-like atmosphere. Spatial design maximizes privacy with carefully positioned residences, abundant landscaping, and secluded balconies. Still, the community encourages organic interactions through shared spaces such as pools and dining areas, balancing exclusivity with a relaxed community vibe.

With its meticulous design and commitment to personalized living, Albany offers endless opportunities for its residents, ensuring that every detail reflects their individuality. In this magnificent sanctuary where elegance meets innovation, Albany stands as a unique destination for those who demand the very best in life.
